Fashion should be a form of escapism, and not a form of imprisonment.
Our fashionista of the week, Maira Pagganwala takes this quote by Alexander Mcqueen to a whole new level. Maira Pagganwala throughout her journalistic career has never failed to look the part; her effortless style chameleons according to occasion, even her casual turns to chic with her aesthetic palette. Maira’s head-turning style cannot be labelled; glamorous, boho-chic, eccentric, quirky, she really has done it all.
Don’t we all want to know her style secrets? We caught up with Maira P to find out just that! We believe she was born with it but let’s get as inspired as we can by learning a thing or two from one of Karachi’s fashion royalties.
Do you follow any fashion icon in particular for sityle inspiration?
M: I don’t follow anyone in particular. However I do admire the style of certain people such as Kate Moss, Edie Sedgwick, Agyness Deyn & Cara Delevingne. I prefer human beings to remain individuals when it comes to style rather than a bandwagon-following, uniformity approach. A person who has their own signature style is someone who would catch my eye in a crowd of “fashionistas”.
On your DVD rack in the “Fashion” section, what movies or TV shows would we find?
M: Oh gosh! I wish I could make up a lie about my extravagant fashion documentary collection but the truth is that with my first baby I have absolutely no time for anything but her! Henceforth, the only thing my “fashion” section would have is old seasons of Sex and the City, Project Runway and America’s Next Top Model, the standard staples of a fashionista’s household.
What beauty essentials would we find in your bag at the moment?
M: EOS lip balm and probably some lipstick that I forgot existed.
A fashion capital that is your elixir to style?
M: As cliché’ as it would sound, I must say Paris. It’s one city where people dress in what’s comfortable for them, yet still look like they just walked off the ramp. I imagine all Parisian women to be tall and skinny and always have on the perfect shade of red lipstick, and even in the new-age health-conscious world of 2015 they still make puffing on a cigarette look quite glamorous.
If all else fails (possibly you’re crunched for time), what is your go-to outfit for a fashion night out?
M: A white button down men’s shirt! I used to wear my husband’s shirts which lead to a not-so-pretty quarrel considering I wasn’t so careful with one of his essential possessions. So I’ve now invested in a bunch of my own! Knotting them and pairing them up with leather pants or distressed jeans is my go-to style.
One element you cannot complete your look without?
M: My gold bangles. They were a present from my mom upon Hajj and I haven’t taken them off ever since.
A fashion design house you swear by?
M: That is constantly evolving depending on the phase I am in. In an ideal world for a casual day I would rely on Alexander Wang’s no-fuss line, more often Isabel Marant or Tibi’s funky yet understated merchandise. And for a night out, I would love to hit a Rossie Assoulin store for the glam-meets-street look.
A fashion purchase that you would never hold back on?
M: A funky and unique, not-easy- to-get, item. A unique fashion discovery is something I would never hold back on.
Best fashion find?
M: Quite a few things that I have surprisingly stumbled upon in my Mom’s closet, inclusive of a vintage Yves Saint Laurent necklace.
Recommend a fall trend’s must-have?
M: Wine-stained lips and the hottest leather jacket on the block.
Could you share a surreal fashion moment with our readers?
M: My husband Qassim and I were in Mykonos a few summers ago and we stumbled upon the coolest boutique where the sales assistants decided to play dress up with me. We spent a couple of hours (much to Qassim’s disappointment) in the store where they made me try on a bunch of exquisite dresses and drool-worthy shoes and bags/clutches. I walked an invisible ramp to their in-house rocking music. It was such a strange, dream-like, super-fun day! Unfortunately, it was also there that I fell in love with a beautiful jacket that I could not end up buying and still wonder about it often.
Maira’s style definitely deserves a 10/10 and stands out as an inspiration to those who want to step out of their style comfort zone. A few signature staples that Maira has been spotted with are bold nails, a chunky significant sparkling accessory, statement shoes, funky tights/leggings, those eccentric “it” bags/clutches and the persona to carry it all with confidence.
